THE DESK PROJECT – DAY THREE

After a morning swim in the sea we hit the road to find the abandoned village of Balestrino. It turned out it is located deep in the mountains, which made it an exciting drive with the mobile home on the narrow windy roads.
The village itself is somewhat spooky and not too safe to enter as it was abandoned in the 1950ies because of an earth slide. Lot of the houses have deep cracks or are already partly collapsed.
I could sense the life that was there before. How the people lived, slept, ate and celebrated. Especially when spotting an old bed, old bottles and stoves.
We spotted a lot of doors but especially two of them caught our attention. We decided to pick them up on the way back and move on direction west.
Another ghost town, Bussana Vecchia, was supposedly close by (100km) so we decided to get it off the check list. It turned out not as abanoned as we hoped. Bussana Vecchia became a squatting hippie art community in the 60ies with bars ,restaurants and shops. Luckily we managed to talk to the village “owner” and agree with him that on Monday at 11pm he will sell us some old doors. (we keep our fingers crossed). On the way out we bumped into Ronald, a dutch guy in exile, who invited us to have dinner with him and his friends. It turned out to be a quite interesting evening with a quality discussion about “conspiracy theories” while drowning in tasty italian red wine.
